Burial at Sea Against With Islam
Islam is opposed to burial at sea, said a spokesman of Al-Azhar, the highest Sunni Muslim leader, on Monday after U.S. officials claim al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden was buried in the waters.
"If it is true that his body was thrown into the sea, then Islam is really against," said Mahmud doom, adviser to the high priest of Al-Azhar, Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, told the French news agency AFP.
"Every dead bodies, victims of homicide or died of natural causes, must be respected. The bodies of believers and not, Muslim or Christian, must be respected," he added.
Al-Azhar, which is based in Cairo, is the most prestigious centers of religious learning in the Sunni Muslim world.
United States officials on Monday said Osama bin Laden was buried at sea after being shot dead in U.S. helicopter attack on the villa's castle in Pakistan to avoid the "purity".
"We want to avoid the situation that the place was a sacred place,"the official told AFP, adding that there was no time to negotiate with other countries to arrange the funeral.
Previously, government officials say about the body, "We make sure that it is handled in accordance with the ways and customs of Islam."
"That we consider very serious, so dealt with appropriately," he said.
